This is what you will be doing as an internal model expert at DNB

You will lead and participate in on-site inspections of credit risk models under the internal ratings-based approach (IRB), which are conducted entirely or partially at banks’ premises. You will provide high-quality analyses and advice on internal models and quantitative credit risk management in support of DNB’s supervisory and financial stability mandates.

As a senior expert, you will be expected to act as Head of Mission (HoM) on inspections. This means taking full responsibility for the project: leading the mission team, managing timelines and deliverables, ensuring the quality and clarity of the output, and coordinating interactions with inspected institutions and internal and external stakeholders. You will also mentor junior staff and actively contribute to knowledge sharing within DNB and across the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • leading or contributing to inspections of IRB and IFRS models across Eurozone banks as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • acting as HoM by managing the mission team, planning and executing the inspection, and engaging with institutions’ senior management;
  • drawing sound supervisory conclusions, reporting and presenting findings with clarity and impact;
  • mentoring junior colleagues and promoting high-quality, consistent supervisory work.

 

This role offers excellent exposure to the inner workings of banks, the architecture of internal risk models, and the functioning of European banking supervision. It is a strong foundation for a broader career in supervision, central banking, or risk management.

You will be based at DNB’s offices in Amsterdam, within the Supervision of National Banks & Expertise Division (TNBE). TNBE comprises around 140 professionals with diverse backgrounds and nationalities, organized into 8 departments. The Internal Models Department consists of 21 staff and focuses on inspections and methodological work related to credit risk models.

Internal model investigations are project-based, with teams composed according to the expertise required for each assignment. Increasingly, these inspections are led and conducted at the European level. Senior experts are expected to take on coordinating roles, including acting as Head of Mission, within these cross-border missions. In addition to inspections, you may participate in internal or international working groups focused on regulation, supervisory methodology, or tooling innovation. You will also have access to a broad range of training and development opportunities, including technical courses, regulatory modules, and soft skills workshops.

This is what we need from you

At DNB, we work with professionals who combine deep technical expertise with strong interpersonal skills. We are looking for a candidate who:

  • has a Master’s degree (a PhD is considered a strong asset) in econometrics, mathematics, quantitative finance, applied physics, or a related quantitative discipline;
  • brings at least 5 years of relevant experience in banking supervision, a financial institution, rating agency, or consulting firm. SSM or cross-border supervisory experience is a clear asset;
  • possesses solid knowledge of credit risk modelling, validation, and/or stress testing;
  • has familiarity with regulatory frameworks, such as the CRR and the ECB Guide to Internal Models;
  • has experience with programming languages and statistical tools such as R, Python, Matlab, or SQL;
  • communicates effectively in English, both written and verbal, and is willing to learn Dutch as part of your onboarding.

You will initially be working on a one-year contract, with the prospect of an extension, provided you have performed well and our organization has not undergone any changes that affect your job.

The other excellent terms and conditions of employment for this position are:

  • A salary of at least € 5,000.- and a maximum of € 9,300.- gross per month, which amounts to a gross annual salary of at least € 75,000.-- and a maximum of € 137,600.- based on a 36-hour working week including a personal choice budget (13th month, holiday pay and personal budget). The final classification depends on your knowledge and experience, among other things.
  • Free choose when you want your 13th month, 8% holiday allowance calculated over 13 months and a freely disposable personal budget of 5.9% of your 12-month salary to be paid out. Your pension entitlements will accrue under a career-average scheme including provisional indexation, with a 6.98% employee contribution.
  • Full reimbursement of your public transport costs for commuting or reimbursement of your costs with your own transport, at € 0.23 per km. For traveling by train, it is possible to travel 1st class. A personal contribution of € 25 per month applies for this.
  • An internet allowance of € 50 net per month.

04 - Tweede gesprek

Wanneer zowel jij als wij positief zijn na het eerste gesprek zien we je graag nogmaals terug. Bij dit vervolggesprek zijn meestal een andere manager uit dezelfde divisie en een (senior) teamlid van de afdeling waar jouw vacature uitstaat aanwezig.

05 - Casus, derde gesprek en/of assessment

Solliciteer je op een functie als toezichthouder of beleidsmedewerker? Dan wordt het eerste of het tweede gesprek vaak gecombineerd met het maken van een schrijfopdracht of een case study. Dit hoor je uiteraard ruim van tevoren. Afhankelijk van het niveau van de functie kan er nog een derde gesprek met de divisiedirecteur en/of een functiegericht (extern) assessment plaatsvinden.

06 - Arbeidsvoorwaardengesprek

Dit wordt tijdens het arbeidsvoorwaardengesprek toegelicht.
